The value of sheer moments of downtime

Great idea, huh! Who has the time?! Well perhaps we choose how all those 1440 minutes of the day are spent – and if we don’t, they disappear without us choosing.

Now, believe me, I do know busy- I am still working fulltime, have 4 kids & 2 dogs & 1 husband; a project house we’ve never quite finished…..and making plans for a whole new life by the sea in 18mths time……

But:
How many minutes do we flick thro our phones, look at the news, read the rubbish leaflet thro the door. Maybe wait at a traffic-light, or outside our child’s school. Impatiently tap our feet awaiting the coffee to come thro, or the kettle to boil?

How about if those micro-moments became glowing glimmers? Can you take just three deeper, slower breaths? Stand outside your back door & look up at the sky for one minute? Roll the window down on the car & pick out the birdsong amidst the orchestra of other noises?

What difference would that make?
How about……Mental health-wise: a re-set of your nervous system back down off the precipice. Physiologically, a flip from the fight/flight/freeze sympathetic system to the rest/digest parasympathetic? A drop in elevated heart-rate, blood pressure? A moment of awe re-connecting us to nature, the world, the divine. A glimmer of joy, or beauty, or pleasure.
